Spam can be too much of a grey area for us to block it completely, so we're leaving the filtering and blocking in your (the client's) capable hands. There are several ways to filter spam in your mail client now that we are scanning it and assigning it a spam score:
Method #1: Subject line blocking.
Our system will add the text {Possible Spam?} to the subject for mail with a Spam Assassin index higher than 5. If you want to filter possible spam, just look for that text in your subject line filters.
Our system will add the text {Likely Spam} to the subject for mail with a Spam Assassin index higher than 20. This is similar to the prior rule, but this will catch the messages that are highly likely to be spam.
Our webmail filter system can use this method of blocking spam. Just click "Options", "Filters", "Edit your filter rules", then add the appropriate subject line filters for the text mentioned above.
Method #2: Mail header blocking.
All mail passing through our cluster will now have two new headers added to them:
X-MailScanner-SpamCheck: X-MailScanner-SpamScore:
The first header will have details about the actual spam check. The second will have a spam score. For each point toward the spam score, a single s character will be appended. So for a mail with a spam score of 7, the header will look like this:
X-MailScanner-SpamScore: sssssss
Thus if you wanted to filter spam with a score of 15 or higher, you could simply check for 15 s's in a row.
We believe (but are not certain) that Outlook and Procmail can support this method. We do not believe Outlook express supports it. Contact your mail client software vendor for details and/or assistance.
Note that we do run procmail. So if you want to setup a .procmailrc file in your home directory to play with this type of filtering, feel free. Please be careful though, it's all too easy to lose incoming mail with typos in your .procmailrc file.
To enable SMTP Authentication:
Outlook & Outlook Express:
Look for checkboxes labeled My server requires authentication and make sure they're checked. DO NOT turn on SPA or Secure Password Authentication. Despite it's name, SPA is not secure.
Eudora:
Look for checkboxes labeled Allow Authentication and make sure it is enabled.
Netscape 4 - 7, Mozilla:
Look for a checkbox labeled Use name and password under the Outgoing Server (SMTP) menu.
KMail:
Under the sending (SMTP) server tab, edit the properties on your SMTP server and make sure Server Requires Authentication is checked.
Evolution:
When adding the SMTP server, check the box labeled Server requires authentication, then under Authentication Type, select Password.
These settings can be difficult to find, and it sees like every email client is different from the next. If you are having difficulty, we highly recommend finding a local computer guru to take a look at your individual configuration.
For example, to test the incoming mail server on port 110, type the following in a DOS CMD box or in the Terminal in Mac OS X and Linux:
telnet mail.kattare.com 110to test the outgoing mail server on port 25, type the following in a DOS CMD box or in the Terminal in Mac OS X and Linux:
telnet mail.kattare.com 25
After entering either telnet line, mail.kattare.com should greet you as such:
+OK POP3 Ready scribe-02 0001ece6If you get a response, great! If not, you have a firewall or something similar blocking your access to us.
Continuing on, you plug in your username as such:
USER yourusernameThe server responds:
+OK USER yourusername set, mateThen you plug in your password:
PASS yourpasswordTo which the server should reply:
+OK You are so inIf you don't get the OK response, you have a password issue and should either reset your password or contact your IT guru (or Kattare Support) and request assistance.
Windows Vista and Windows 7 do not include Telnet default. The reason for this is that telnet does not include any security features. In an attempt to increase security in the new versions of Windows, Microsoft made the decision to disable Telnet by default.

Setting up an IMAP account with Microsoft Outlook
Summary:
Using IMAP email is especially useful if you wish to keep all of your mail organization on the mail server and have it accessible by a multitude of devices instead of on one primary device as POP3 does. In this way all of your email organization will be identical weather you are viewing it with your IMAP mail client on your computer, on your mobile device or through the Kattare Webmail interface.
However, using Microsoft Outlook with an IMAP mail account does have some limitations. See the notes at the end of this article to review the two most common ones and some work-around tips.
Here is a quick summary of the important settings to use:
Account Type: IMAP
Email Address: username@kattare.com (your full email address)
Incoming Mail Server: mail.kattare.com
Incoming Mail User Name: (your POP3 username as displayed in the Email Management here.)
Incoming Mail Password: (your POP3 password from the same page.)
Outgoing Mail Server: mail.kattare.com, USE AUTHENTICATION
Outgoing Mail User Name: (your POP3 username as displayed in the Email Management here.)
Outgoing Mail Password: (your POP3 password from the same page.)
Outgoing Mail Port: 25 (or 2525)
Incoming Mail Port: 993
And here are the step by step instructions. Please note if you are not running Outlook 2003, your screens may be slightly different those pictured below.
--- Initial Account Setup ---
Go to the Tools menu and select Email Accounts….
Select Add a new e-mail account and click Next.

Select IMAP and click Next.

In the Internet E-mail Settings (IMAP) window, enter Your Name and your E-mail Address (note: these are the name and e-mail address that will be displayed in the "From:" field when the recipient opens the e-mail). Enter mail.kattare.com for the Incoming mail server (IMAP) and the Outgoing mail server (SMTP) fields. Enter your POP3 User Name and Password as you have been told by your local Systems Administrator, IT Guru, or the Kattare Members Section Email Management Page. Be sure that the Remember password box is checked and the Log on using Secure Password Authentication (SPA) is not checked. When done, click on the More Settings… button.

In the Internet E-mail settings window that pops up, select the Outgoing Server tab. Check the box titled My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication and Use same settings as my incoming mail server.

Some ISPs will block access to the standard outgoing mail port 25 if the connection is going to a mail server other than their own. To work around this, Kattare has configured an alternate outgoing mail server port on port 2525. If you find you have trouble sending mail through Kattare's outgoing mail server, you may try changing the Outgoing server (SMTP) to 2525 in the Advanced tab.

Click the OK button followed by the Next button then finally the Finish button.

--- Setting the IMAP Folder Subscriptions ---
At this point, you will only be 'subscribed' you to your Inbox and a few standard IMAP folders. If you have other folders that you want to manage with IMAP you can do so by continuing the setup with the following instructions.
From the Tools menu select IMAP folders…
Click on the Query button. This will display all the folders in your home directory. Your IMAP folders should be stored in the mail directory. Select the folder you want to subscribe to then click on Subscribe.

You can keep going through the list and subscribing to as many folders as you want. When finished, click OK.
--- Limitations ---
As stated at the beginning of this article, using Microsoft Outlook with an IMAP mail account does have some limitations. Most importantly, Outlook will not allow you to have a "unified" Inbox with your Personal Folders. To see your IMAP Inbox, you will need to browse to it.

You can diminish this inconvenience by adding the Inbox to the Favorite Folders section or by setting Outlook to open in the Kattare Inbox folder. Simply drag the Kattare Inbox folder to the Favorites section to add it there. To start Outlook in the Kattare Inbox, select the Options item in the Tools menu. Select the Other tab and click on the Advanced Options… button. Use the Browse button to select the folder you wish to be in when Outlook starts. In this case, we are starting in the Kattare Inbox

Another issue will arise when you delete a message from the IMAP account. After deletion a line will appear through the message. At this point the email has not actually been deleted and remains on the mail server. To permanently delete these messages from both Outlook AND the mail server, select Purge Deleted Messages from the Edit menu.
Microsoft also has a Knowledge Base article explaining how to change the default Sent items folder to the IMAP Folder on the server. This can be helpful when you want to be able to read your sent items from any device that is an IMAP client.

In the Internet E-mail Settings (POP3) window, enter Your Name and your E-mail Address (note: these are the name and e-mail address that will be displayed in the "From:" field when the recipient opens the e-mail). Enter mail.kattare.com for the Incoming mail server (POP3) and the Outgoing mail server (SMTP) fields. Enter your POP3 User Name and Password as you have been told by your local Systems Administrator, IT Guru, or the Kattare Members Section Email Management Page. In the Internet E-mail settings window that pops up, select the Outgoing Server tab. Check the box titled My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication and Use same settings as my incoming mail server.

Select the Advanced tab. Check the box titled Leave a copy of messages on the server and the box titled Remove from server after [ ] days then enter an appropriate number of days to keep the messages on the server. This will ensure that you do not fill your email disk quota on the Kattare mail server but also allow you enough time to copy the messages from the mail server to another PC or mobile device.

If it is not your first time running Microsoft Outlook 2010, select the File tab and press the Add Account button in the Info section:

The account setup wizard will begin at the Auto Account Setup window seen in the second picture below.

In the Auto Account Setup window, select "Manually configure server settings or additional server types" and click on the Next button. This will by-pass the mail server auto-detection process.

In the Choose Service window, select "Internet E-Mail" and click on the Next button.

In the Internet E-mail Settings window, enter Your Name and E-mail address in the User Information section (note: these are the name and e-mail address that will be displayed in the "From:" field when the recipient opens the e-mail).

Outlook 2010 will now test the server connections. If both tests succeed, click the Close button.

If the Send test e-mail message fails it may be because your ISP blocks access to the standard outgoing mail port 25 when the connection is going to a mail server other than their own. To work around this, Kattare has configured an alternate outgoing mail server port on port 2525. If you find you have trouble sending mail through Kattare's outgoing mail server on port 25, you may try reopening the More Settings window and changing the Outgoing mail (SMTP) port to "2525" in the Advanced tab.

After clicking the Finish button, the account setup is complete.

Some ISPs will block access to the standard outgoing mail port 25 if the connection is going to a mail server other than their own. --- Don't Let Your Kattare Mail's Disk Quota Fill! ---
Has this happened to you before? You get a quota warning message from Kattare but do not have any mail in your inbox. This is because POP3 email actually copies a message from the server to Windows Live Mail. What it does with that original copy of the message left on the Kattare mail server is controlled by these settings in the Advanced Properties tab:

Be sure to set them as you see fit. We recommend to "Leave a copy of messages on server" and to "Remove from server after [5] day(s)".

Happy Emailing!
A lot of people used to log into prince to check their Kattare mail accounts. This was easy for us to maintain as long as prince was able to see all of the file servers. We can no longer support that, because we have file servers at two geographically seperate locations now. The answer is straight-forward; setup PINE for IMAP.
Step 1 - Entering Setup
Log into your ssh account on your webserver. Start 'pine'. It will by default take you to the Main Menu, if it doesn't, Hit 'M' to return to the main menu. From there hit 'S' to enter Setup.
Step 2 - Set up your Inbox
We now need to set up your inbox. Hit 'C' for Config, and scroll down to "inbox-path". Press 'Enter', and you will be prompted for "Name of Inbox server". Enter the following, replacing "abc123" with your Kattare username.
{mail.kattare.com/SSL/user=abc123/NoValidate-Cert}INBOX
Hit 'E' for Exit Setup, and 'Y' to commit changes.
Step 3 - Set up IMAP folders Top of page
Now, we need to set up access to your IMAP folders (other than your Inbox). By now, you will be back at the main menu. Hit 'S' to enter Setup, and then 'L' for Collection Lists. (This may not be displayed on the first page of Setup options if you have a small terminal, you can use Page Up or Page Down to scroll.)
Press 'Enter' and you will modify your "Mail" collection list. For "Server", enter the following, replacing "abc123" with your Kattare username.
mail.kattare.com/SSL/user=abc123/NoValidate-Cert
For "Path", enter the path to your IMAP folder tree. This should be:
Press 'Ctrl-X' to save. You may be prompted to enter your IMAP server password at this point; after which, hit 'Y' to "Exit and save changes", and then 'E' to "Exit Setup".
Step 4 - all done!
Pine is now properly configured for IMAP use. It should work roughly the way it did before.
I keep getting Quota Warnings but my Email appears empty.
Usually, this is caused by a forgotten configuration on the POP3 mail client. Check your client application to be sure that you are removing messages from the server either immediately after downloading, a specified number of days after downloading or when deleted from the local trash.
You should feel free to change the settings to best suit your needs. For example, if you receive mail on a PC and your mobile phone, you may wish to leave messages on the server for a few days to allow both devices to copy the email from the server before it is deleted. Or you may only receive email on one computer and want to have the email deleted from the server when you empty the trash on that computer.
In Microsoft Outlook you will find these settings in Tools menu under Email Accounts-->View or change existing e-mail accounts-->(Kattare account) Change-->More Settings-->Advanced:

In Microsoft Outlook Express and Windows Live Mail for Windows7, you will find them in the Tools menu under Accounts-->(Kattare account) Properties-->Advanced:

In Mozilla Thunderbird for Windows or Mac OS X the options appear in the Tools menu under Account Settings...-->(Kattare Account)(Server Settings):

In Apple Mail, you will find them in the Mail menu under Preferences-->Accounts-->(Kattare Account) Mailbox Behaviors:

In Microsoft Entourage for Mac Office 2008, they are in the Tools menu in Accounts. Double click on your Kattare Account then select the Options tab:

Entourage 2008 for Mac OS X is downloading all my mail again!
Summary:
When logging in to check your Kattare POP3 mail account, Entourage starts downloading previously downloaded messages again.
This commonly happens when Entourage has a corrupted mail database file. Microsoft provides a tool called the Microsoft Database Utility that can verify and rebuild this database.

To use this tool, simply launch it from your /Applications/Microsoft Office 2008/Office folder.

As always, it is highly recommended that a backup be completed before rebuilding any database files.
Your server has unexpectedly terminated the connection. Possible causes for this include server problems, network problems, or a long period of inactivity. Account: 'mail.kattare.com', Server: 'mail.kattare.com' Protocol: SMTP, Port: 2525, Secure(SSL): Yes, Error Number: 0x800CCC0F
Microsoft's error neglects to mention that Outlook Express just can't both change the port number AND use SSL on outgoing connections.
Either change the port back to port 25, or if your ISP blocks outgoing traffic on port 25, then you'll have to turn off SSL.
Spammers love setting custom dates on emails because they know abnormally old or abnormally new dates often garner attention.
Now, if you view the message headers and your message actually is over 30 days old, keep the message and send us an email with details so we can take a look. ;-)
